        VIDEO PERFORMANCE “U”
        GHOST ROOM
        From the entrance of the
        g a l l e r y a u d i e n c e s g o u p
the s t airs, facing monitor
        television A which is showing
a person who appears to be
        an author. However, such an
        author-like person cannot be
        found anywhere in the room.
        When stepping to the center
        of the room, the audiences
find monitor B in front of them
in which they are seeing the
        author who should not have
        been there. On the screen,
they also see other images of
        the make-believe author talking
to them around the table, or
        serving coffee to them. What
come up are not only those
        images but sounds. They hear
a slam of the door, the footsteps
        of someone coming up the
        stairs, or the telephone bell
        apparently answered by the
        author. The reality is, however,
that no one is coming, no bell is
        answered. The work gives the
        audiences a sense of “presence”
        at the live performance, as
        they experience an interesting
        “encounter between the past
        and present through the images”
        by taking part in them.
