We carry on a conversation
while looking into the state of
mind of people we are talking
to. In Japan we make a ges-
ture at them, nodding our con-
sent instantly or nodding our
heads after a bit of thought,
according to whether or not
their ideas are completely
agreeable. In the conversation
we read those intervals, “Ma”
[Time and Space] of silence.
The invisible time and space is
incorporated into language and
touches mind. Unlike an encoun-
ter between objects, an encoun-
ter between people requires
internal “interaction of spirit” that
is therefore limited to an once-in-
a-lifetime chance. In other words,
each moment between people is
a “crucial encounter”. Supposing
that we move our hands during a
conversation. I have realized that
in order to understand the meaning
or psychology of a human behav-
ior, it is best to pose a time lag of
around 0.3 second before and after
the behavior. That is to say that we
grasp the real sense of the present
situation on the grounds of the state
of 0.3 seconds ago. The time differ-
ence of 0.3 seconds equal to the time
in which a radio wave takes a round-
trip to a stationary satellite which lies
36,000km up in the equatorial sky. The
similarity might imply that personal
space of human beings is closely con-
nected with the universe.
