SLIDING PAPER DOOR INSTRUMENT NO.3
In the West, doors act as a block from outside
creating independent space in a room. On the
other hand, shoji [sliding paper] doors in Japan
have a very inviting characteristic that they
work like “filters” which even let in “spiritual
energy”, on top of air, sound, or light within
and without a room. “Sliding Paper Door
Instrument No.3” incorporates sensors in
the door frames which capture the touch and
transform its strength, tone, or interval into
various sounds. Also, images of performers
are projected onto the screen of the paper
door to express their inner messages. What I
aim to consider in the work is how to see and
represent the “world beyond technology”, in
relation to tradition and culture in the trend
toward globalization. The sliding paper door
instrument using the Internet broadband
system enables live sound communications
among multiple stations far from one another.
On top of that, audiences all over the world
can view and participate in the performance
which combines real space behind the doors
with cyberspace on the web.
SIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUMENT NO.2
When performers touch somewhere on
the four-legged frame, the built-in sensors
capture the touch and transform it into
sounds. The tone varies with the strength,
inter val, or rhy thm of the touch. The
performers enjoy the generated sounds,
while looking at their own silhouettes or
behaviors that are projected in stretched
size on the front wall. “Sign Language
Instrument No.2” is also a network art using
global P which makes possible multiplex live
communications.
