THE FORCE BEHIND THE MASk: Monte was born in Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan. Although his painting career was founded in
London, Ontario, he presently works in a kitchener home studio.
Since 1962, Monte has shown his work in many private and
public galleries both nationally and internationally.
After retirement in 1992, he has pursued a full-time career in art.
His interests continue to vary in scope, from monumental murals
to contemporary, abstractive art and computer- generated
images. His art work may be viewed at monteartist.org.
STATEMENT: Monte believes that we sometimes wear masks
either for real protection or to hide our true thoughts and
feelings. This concept is expressed through varied forms of
media.
Between 1979 and 1995 he produced huge murals in churches
and a farmer’s market. Both the mask and mural series featured
down-to-earth subject matter inspired by Mexican muralists
such as Diego Rivera and Orozco.
TRADITIONS: Traditional masks were created to symbolize human
thoughts and beliefs. Early societies such as China, greece,
Africa and Japan used masks to express emotion. They believe
that masks may reveal the inner spirit and soul.
ISSUES: Contemporary painter Monte Wright explores how masks
are used for physical protection or as an emotional barrier
between the mask wearer and the outside world. Strong line,
vivid color and fluid motion portray his thoughts and emotions.
CONNECTIONS: In the form of digital prints, international life is revealed.
