My work is about ambiguity and virtual dislocation or
dislocation of the mind. It focuses on the ‘gray zones’ in
public and private notions of truth as foundation.
Using light to translate some of these issues into my work I
project on, through and in a range of materials such as yarn,
scotch tape, ice, water. I select them for the way they absorb
or reflect light manipulations; and for the possible shadows
they may create during this process. I like to think of these
shadows (or reflections) as a second life - an alter ego if you
may - either representing or misleading the inherent nature
of the original subject while creating a form of non-space. I
also exploit text in some of my more conceptual pieces to
explore ideas around ambiguity (and irony), as ‘language’ is
highly ambiguous in itself.
Through my work I attempt to investigate the content of
what we do and do not perceive as true or false in an
everyday reality. I’m interested in the social perceptions of
the so-called truths we are typically raised and educated
with; but do not necessarily hold their ground as we mature.
Making the move from Europe to the US made me even more
susceptible to these observations. Not because of the
physical dislocation but because of the “virtual dislocation” -
a dislocation of the mindset – where one is forced to re-
evaluate in order to adjust to a new situation or a new
consensus.
My work includes installations with still or video projections,
text, digital prints and video with sound.
