L’ECHALIER - PARLEAzUL (LADDER)
The Ladder can be metaphor of passage between two distinct worlds,
East and west, above and beyond, then and now. The installation, recently
on display during the ‘Nuit Blanche’, curated by Nicholas Bourriaud, is
conceived as an initiation passage through an imaginary cloister; thus, the
input of the viewer / visitor is of utmost importance. The trip is charted by
compositions in which the artist toyed with the significance of the capital
letter “P”. The visitor is compelled to follow a route during which he or she
successively discovers, as one follows the form of the cloister, different
paintings placed side by side to mirrors. These reflect the numerical
projection of each painting, in repetitive manner, and their obsessively
repetitive image is in its turn just another reflection of the iteration of the
letter “P” in the process of deconstruction – reconstruction of the virtual
space. Arriving to the first corridor, one finds at the left the Ladder. After
having mounted it and crossed on the other side, one discovers in the
center of the court a projector with a fascicle of light pointing above, which
stands as a symbol of the experience which is about to commence. The
continuum of the experience is bound to create a space within which the
freedom of the visitor exists only to the extent where the combinatorial
options of the set number of elements can result in different personal
interpretations. One must be brave to cross the fence.
