Jean Jacques Porret, an engineer by training, embarked on a journey
to New York with a burning desire to master English and carve out
a life of his own. It was here that his artistic career took flight, a
trajectory that soon propelled him to Chicago. The impetus behind
an artist’s drive is an enigma, reserved for those with a fighting
spirit and a fertile imagination. Porret was captivated by the art
of bronze sculpture and the intricate process of lost wax casting.
Porret found bronze to be a demanding yet rewarding medium,
one that responds with a gentle touch. His insatiable curiosity
led him to museums worldwide, where he absorbed a wealth
of knowledge and exchanged ideas with some of the era’s most
distinguished artists.
Fast forward to the present day, Porret’s bronze masterpieces grace
countless collections across Europe, Japan, and the United States.
His talent was recognized when he was commissioned to create
the bronze sculpture for the American-Swiss Friendship Award.
The ‘Abage Encyclopedia of Bronzes’ characterizes Porret as an
autonomous thinker, whose bronze sculptures can be described
as a harmonious fusion of naturalistic and modern styles, where
forms are distilled to their fundamental rhythms and elements.
A few years ago, Porret, unsatisfied with the bases of his
sculptures, acquired a granite and marble company to gain full
control over their creation. This led to the integration of marble
and granite into his bronze sculptures, which have become a
defining feature of his recent works. These facets of Porret’s
personality, which could not be tamed by rules, contribute to
his originality and are the essence of his work.
Porret’s sculptures depict the human form in abstract, with
one shape seamlessly transitioning into the next. Some pieces
feature fragments of granite or marble piercing through the
bronze, merging the forces of nature and man, resulting in a
strikingly modern and alluring interpretation of the human form.
