1940 born in Auckland, new zealand
lives and works in Auckland, new zealand
Ken robinson traveled to england from new zealand and was accepted for full time study in painting at
st. Martins school of Art in London. After completing The national diploma of Fine Art program he was selected
for postgraduate study. As a student at st. Martins, robinson won the third year painting prize. In 1967 he was
appointed Lecturer in Painting and design at Middlesbrough College of Art in Yorkshire, england, where he
worked for two years. He was appointed Lecturer at the Auckland Institute of Technology in 1971.
At present he is working as a part-time senior Lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology.
robinson’s artwork has been exhibited widely in new zealand, in one-person shows as well as in group exhibi-
tions. Many of his works are in private collections. He has exhibited overseas in: sweden, Italy, Canada, Venice,
London, and new York.
The basic structure of his work is intellectual, but his paintings display a unique balance of intuition and
reason that stops them from being too predictable. By exploring sculptural, spatial, and painterly concerns,
as well as multi-printmaking techniques, robinson is able to give each art-piece a personality that represents
much more than the basic qualities of shape and color. The wit and experience of the artist is demonstrated
as he takes a single form and energizes it in ways that are both elaborate and simple and he does this with a
variety of mediums. Ken robinson is not just an expressive painter; he is more readily a dedicated analyst of
form, moving beyond the basic process of activity and immediate expression.
Control, intellect, and emotive energy remain the primary ingredients in his art.
