robert F. Kauffmann was born in Willingboro, new Jersey, in 1963 and earned a Bachlor of Arts degree
in Computer science from rutgers University in 1987. While in college, he developed a personal artistic style,
inspired by his background in mathematics and the work of M.C. escher. Kauffmann’s designs portray a visual
paradox; he uses mathematical structures as expressive tools. He calls this style “Mathematical surrealism.”
since 1988, Kauffmann’s work has been recognized and exhibited in numerous art shows in new York City and
internationally. As well his artwork has been accepted for publication and he has won numerous awards and
critical acclaim. When speaking about his art, Kauffmann states: “Most of my works are hand-drawn originals
from which are made serigraphs via photo-emulsion technique. Though my work is not created with the aid of
computers, it can rightly be stated that it has been influenced by computer imagery. Computer graphics have
facilitated the visualization of things that were never seen before computers were invented. Once such ima-
gery was brought to light, it became possible for me to render this kind of subject matter using more traditional
methods. I have found the use of traditional methods to yield more satisfying results than digital media.” In
1990, Kauffmann began to produce animated films which have garnered awards and which have been scree-
ned in film festivals. In 1998, he began work on an epic poem entitled The Mask of Chock. It was published in
2002. robert K. Kauffmann currently resides in Cinnaminson, new Jersey, U.s.A.
