Marta dIMItresCU
1955 born in cluj-napoca, transylvania
lives and works in stockholm, sweden
Marta dimitrescu is a very talented painter who attempts to approach reality by imposing strict rules
of geometrical shapes and colors on her subject matter. Her present work shows a basic tendency towards
what she calls: “The appeal to nature.” nature is for dimitrescu vitally essential. This artist, who so strictly
enforces her ‘rules’ on reality, subsequently re-creates it by grasping its vital force of matter and color. Her
creative work is carried on within nature’s framework, compelled by the traditional device of ‘painting-on-
the-spot’, a technique that engenders an image of nature as it is perceived and re-shaped by the artist’s
responsiveness. Thus, on the one hand there are several things that have been removed, such as categorical
subjects with specific features, local color, materialization of surfaces, and the relationship between light
and motif. But on the other hand her works depict some highly cherished things with an accuracy indicative
of a familiar environment that undeniably belongs to nature and a maintenance of proportions between
forms and colors. Her paintings and drawings achieve unpredictable optical effects resulting from the whir-
ling and flowing of color applied in quick sequence and from a very effective superimposition of surfaces and
planes that, taken all together, build up a coherent visual system. The imagery of Marta dimitrescu is a balan-
ced and eloquent synthesis between motif, artistic insight, and chromatic matter. The inclination towards
nature signifies a real gain for the painter at this stage of creation. (HOreA HOrsIA)
