José Armando sanabria rodríguez works with expressive strokes that characterize a spontaneous and
free style. The precision of his immutable line and markings in circular form articulates his passion and the
state of emotion he experiences during the creative process. His artistic creations are a reinterpretation of
traditional provincial paintings conveyed in contemporary media. He uses mixed media as a form of expression
with colors that are predominantly red, orange, and black. The basic effigy of his works is the iguana, depicted
as a macro-vision and representing the theme of loss. These ‘macro-graphics’, inspired by provincial painting
and translated into a more au courant connotation, “invite” the spectator to examine them. sanabria’s work
is an abstraction filled with personal and contemporary expressive gestures. He calls his artworks, “provincial
macro-graphics”, which he describes as metaphors for the thoughts and conflicts engendered by feelings of
loss, metaphors that present themselves as a facade for, what he calls, the “menotécnia”. emphasis is placed
on the cycle of life, the continuous coming and going, again and again. He uses contemporary media as a
symbol of the process of human adaptation as a thinking and enlightened being. sanabria prefers mixed media
because it allows him to express with fortitude the conceptual character of the evaluative cycle in which the
planet has persisted and in which mankind has adapted to change without abandoning ancestral origins. In the
series of Menotecnia, sanabria demonstrates great plastic and conceptual maturity in a sufficiently expressive
manner, propelling himself into the international art world without abdicating his tropical roots and the warmth
of Puerto rico, so distinctive of the Caribbean.
