The poetry I seek through painting, to me, represents the need for “the
heavens”, the ineffable, and an antidote to habitually inert everyday-
life. I feel the need for the real with the disclosure of each metaphorical
form created with the help of color pigment. Perhaps painting is a
compensation for the intangible universe we live in, with many wonderful
layers overlapping dull ones. This also generates existential anguish, and
perhaps sometimes the sense of frivolity. Therefore, there is a tactile
desire to touch the canvas through the placement of the pictorial paste
and the exteriorization of successive layering. At this stage, the pictorial
material is yielding and it only becomes vibrant once I succeed in giving it
life. Painting attains a deeper consciousness of expression where words
and prose struggles to get through. The images that surface through this
process represent how I perceive the world, my perception moulded
by my wayfaring through the winding canals and plains of Netherlands,
the impressions that occurred while coming to the West, along with the
continuous unrest of taming the canvas.
