KUM-NaM BaIK
1948 born in Korea
lives and works in seoul, Korea
Kum-nam Baik’s graphic works depict his philosophy of design and professionalism. His artistic depic-
tions constantly evolve while still remaining firmly based in literature and philosophy. They are not confined to
practicality and continually return to the basics of formative arts.
Moving away from the limits imposed on graphic design by the industrialized society, Baik aims in the
creation of his art to delineate the fundamentals of graphic design. Besides his contributions to the art world,
he has also been instrumental in the development of cooperative relationships between academia and indu-
stry. This professional attitude is well displayed in his expeditious poster series initiated thirty years ego when
the world of designing was still very new to most Koreans. Baik is at the forefront of avant-garde art by relating
graphic design with cultural values and his art continues to expand horizons through the use of new techni-
ques and experimentation with analog and digital technology as an art form. recently, a poster exhibition of
artwork done by north and south Korean artists was planned and organized by Baik. His prints, deeply rooted
in formative arts, express the profundity of his graphic sensitivities and the culmination of his philosophy of
design. These works consist of a combination of delicate materials manipulated by a dedicated artist, making
them inseparable from their creator. However, it is important to note that Kum-nam Baik’s prints are the reflec-
tion of life itself, not a simple combination of new tools, medium and techniques. In this sense, his Character
series is in line with the fundamentals of modern formative arts. It is true that his works have the features of
conceptual art, but they go beyond that. By integrating graphics into prints, Baik’s art exhibits relevant artistic
depictions that fully reflect both the Korean tradition and modern art.
