Marlie Burton-roche is a Canadian visual artist and political activist who works in solidarity with the popular
socio-political movement in el salvador. Her art represents the merging of a very private career with what she
calls: “The nightmare of history in the making.” Twice during the civil war in el salvador she was captured and
detained by the salvadoran military.
Her current series of artworks entitled ¡NO al Plan Colombia! reflect the life and death struggle of
revolutionaries in Latin America as they continue to fight for peace with justice in the face of immeasurable
odds. Plan Colombia is a $1.3 billion military aid package that the U.s. government has been sending to the
Colombian government. since Plan Colombia was implemented in July 2000 countless massacres have been
committed by the Colombian government military and paramilitaries, the targets of their brutal violence often
directed towards children, women, and anyone suspected as guerrilla supporters because of their legal
activism for social justice. It is time to dismantle the myth of the so-called War on drugs and show the truth:
the government of the United states of America is directly intervening in Colombia’s civil war to guarantee the
U.s. easy access to Colombia’s natural resources and to maintain power in this geographically strategic region.
The devastation wrought by the implementation of Plan Colombia is Definitely Not A Landscape.
