                                                      subsidiary rights

              • Foreign Rights: These are the rights to license the content of a book to overseas
publishers. Once these publishers have the license, they can produce their own edition
of the content for distribution in their market or territory. Foreign rights agents serve as
liaisons between foreign publishers and rights holders by facilitating contract signatures,
ensuring that publication schedules are met, and payments are received according to the
conditions laid down in the contract.

              • Translation Rights: These rights can be sold by the copyright holder of the original
text, which, in most cases, is the publisher (if the book has been published traditionally).
When trying to translate a book, the publisher will reach out to foreign publishers to try
and convince them to buy the translation rights. Translation rights allow a book to be
translated and published in different languages.

              • Subsidiary Rights: In the publishing industry, subsidiary rights are all the rights enjoyed
by the author as the copyright holder. They give the author the right to exploit their book
in other media, and they cover every form of the book that does not include the physical
book itself. Subsidiary rights can include the rights to publish different formats of the same
work (i.e., hardcover, paperback, mass market, audio, and electronic books), to create
and publish translations of a work, to publish editions in different countries or regions, to
publish an eBook or audiobook version, to distribute through book clubs, to adapt a work
for film, television, radio, or software, or to create sequels and spin-off material.
