“I can pick up tools and carve. Two of my teachers have
been Keith Wolfe Smarch and Tommy Dickson Jr. Tommy
was able to take the ‘mundane’ and transform it into
something unique. It was his way of observation. This
fits with Teslin tradition if you look at our old camps they
were like big installations. We mimicked our way into
this modern world and we are observing adapting and
moving forward as a people … now if there is anything
contemporary that’s contemporary! We still as a family
use old bone tools that are what I grew up with. My tra-
ditional foods and the smells of ‘wild’ were around me
as I grew up. My mother always encouraged me to live
in both worlds. She never closed the world to us even
though she was in residential school; she just adapted
and taught us how to do this as well.” (Excerps)
