expression, the consummation of many techniques
over the years; evoking a spontaneous execution - a
sub-conscious transformation challenging me when I
am creating - it becomes part of me. It is pure energy
expressed in the shortest possible time to prevent
retouching or controlled design. This spontaneous
execution is so hypnotic, so much so, that it is almost
impossible to be influenced by a previous work,
achieving total originality every time.”
Ygartua is a painter and muralist with bases
in Canada, France, Spain and England. He has
single handedly painted some of the largest
public space murals in Canada and the United
States. His most famous works are his “Heritage
Series” depicting North American Natives
and other ethnic and cultural groups. He is
renown world wide for his monumental murals
commemorating historical events, speaking
to ethnic pride and honoring local heroes. His
largest mural to date “Legends of the Millennium
/Salute to the Record Breakers“ is painted on
two walls of the Beachcomber International
located in Surrey, B.C. The over 9000 square
foot (24 ft X 390 ft) fresco was created by
Ygartua in 2000. Ygartua’s most recent mural,
“United in Histor y“, was commissioned by
Shearwater Marine Group to commemorate
the history of Bella Bella, B.C. The 22 ft x 120 ft
fresco depicts the history of Bella Bella since
its founding, by the Hudson Bay Company, as a
trading post in 1833. The mural, on the side of
a World War II airplane hangar on Denny Island,
was entirely drawn and painted free-hand by
Ygartua in 20 days, with the whole process
witnessed in real-time around the world by an
exclusive video link (May 22 to June 10, 2013).
Pauline Hilistis Waterfall and the Hereditary
Chiefs of the Heiltsuk Nation, Bella Bella dubbed
him The Mural Miracle Maker.
