Making work for me is a vital means of exploration. Utter submergence in
this process provides distraction to obsessive compulsions, manifested in
collecting, and hoarding. The act of making allows time set aside to think,
rather than mindless work. Creating fantastical objects and things, provides
a refuge, and a space in which to vomit thoughts. The body is a common
point of reference, not just physically, but also psychologically – the human
condition, and instinct. My use of a certain cartoon aesthetic with bright
colours alludes to a childish innocence. I am influenced by a contemporary
cultural aesthetic – growing up in an era of Jim Henson puppets, with their
showy over the top gestures, yet set in a world that for me was and is
truly believable. I am fascinated by the handmade craft object. I enjoy its
associative values as something familiar from my childhood, but also its
unwarranted cosy connotations that can become thrilling when subverted
and distorted with the suppositious and traditional nature of craft in folklore,
fairs and ritual. This connects with my love of the dark, glamorous and
uncanny spectacle of theatre. where the beautiful unmasks the horrific.
