His sensitivity to color, which he developed quickly, was developed
against this backdrop. All of these self-taught experiences served
as a foundation, which carried him into formal training at the School
of Fine Arts, which was rigorous and disciplined.
At that time, the Soviet approach to art and culture was purely
conservative. Though offensive and distasteful to Oks, he was
expected to work in this tradition.
