artistic journey throughout the
Indonesian archipelago.
S i n c e t h e t r e n d o f p a i n t i n g
with wallpap er sweep er s on
canvasses as large as sheets has
become histor y, rien vörgers
developed around 1980 his own
original style of painting, which
h e c al le d “m o s a i c - s t y le ” ( A
german critic used in the late
1990’s the term “consensism”
for a similar manner of painting).
rien vörgers’ technique - as
practiced up till now - does not
include contours, nor shadows
o r o v e r- ru n to ne s , ne i t he r
p e r s p e c t i v e. Ev e r y p i e c e o f
color lies against the next one,
s o t h a t y e t i m a g i n a r y l i n e s
emerge.
T hi s t e c h ni q u e ini t ia t e s ,
t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e e f f e c t o f
the richly connected register
of colors, a remarkable visual
power.
Apart from the early gouaches,
rien works mostly with acrylic
material and started the last
decennia to originate powerful
works with three-dimensional
objects mounted on the painted
panel. “Substantially as well as
technically his work is unique”
a statement uttered by interior
a r c h i t e c t g . F. k o o p m a n ,
lec turer at the Ar t Ac ademy
of Enschede on the occasion
of an solo exhibition of rien’s
work, he concluded that “every
c en tim e t er o f r i en vör ger s’
work is a full painting in itself”.
