Creation as a Way of Life
Gad Ullman is a very unique artist whose work combines both public art
and fine arts. He opened his studio for public art more than twenty years
ago. Those who visit his studio in Tel-Aviv will find that the public aspect,
models and sketches are mixed with intimate artwork.
The artist was born in Israel in 1935 to a family who had recently
CHESS FIGURES, 2002 PAINTED METAL, CM. 3500 immigrated from Germany. His father built their house in the International
(FIRST PRIZE, GOLDEN CROSS COMPETITION THE DESIGN ASSOCIATION, ISRAEL 2002) architectural style (Bauhaus). His mother was a kindergarten teacher.
It was a home that “came to be a mix of discipline and diligence with
playful creativity”. Throughout his life, Gad Ullman has used the elements
from his childhood; from the ancient kitchen tools of his grandmother to
scenes from the streets of old Tel Aviv.
Footsteps from those days can be found in wall paintings and sculptures
in many public places- from universities to school yards, memorial
monuments to bank branches.
Gad Ullman has a holistic approach to art and life. He studied many
different fields, such as alternative Medicine, tai-chi and performance
based arts. Theseinfluences are evident in his art as everything flows, as
in a dance. He is capable of using many forms of technology, changing
from one to the other; from paintings to sculpture, from computer design
to handwork incorporating plaster. He strongly believes in inspiration and
once he has found it, it is only a question of how best to implement the
inspiration into artistic form. The execution might take months and it
may need a crew to execute it, but the Artist must keep the initial energy
from beginning to end without losing the inspiration.
This devotion has brought Gad Ullman half a dozen prizes in the “Golden
Cross” competitions over the last few years. This is amazing as his work
was mainly two dimensional. The artist continues to study and evolve,
and the resulting influences are evident in his work. It was only in the
years 1995/6 that Gad Ullman studied as a professional sculpture. His
first one-man show of bronze and copper works was held in 1997.
Gad Ullman sees himself as and Israeli artist. He is nourished by Jewish
elements which take form in he art by use of Hebrew letters, symbols
and archeological elements. He is also influenced by political events,
for example, he opened recently a one man show about the current
disengagement proposals.
