B. Jane Cowie is an artist and glass maker. Exploring notions of memory
and nostalgia, her public artmaking practice considers aspects of place,
community and cultural connection. Designing and creating numerous
large scale art glass installations, Cowie continues to develop and
experiment with different traditional glassmaking techniques while
integrating modern technological processes.
Swirling Surrounds is an interactive artwork installed temporarily during 3
exhibitions in Australia, Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi (2017), the following
year in Cottesloe (2018) and 2019 installed on a hillside in Wollongong (her
home town) at Sculptures @ Killalea. The interactive and intensive nature
of the installation process creates an amazing opportunity to connect
with others. Participants worked together and were fully involved in the
process as an expression of collaboration, consensus and community.
The installation methodologies were communicated from one person to
another through interaction. Thus, the assembling of the artwork reflects
Coral Fleur, The Palette Condominium, handmade glass, Singapore
Fecundity, Sentosa Island, handmade glass and kiln formed glass, Singapore
aspects of emergence, where properties not necessarily possessed by
individual members, were found and developed within the collective.
Ultimately the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
Considering our increasingly interconnected and inter-netted world,
Cowie focuses on the development and evolution of community and
connectivity. Encompassing many different cultures and crossing
numerous country borders, this large-scale installation offers an
immersive interaction for visitors as they enter into the sculpture
which offers a sense of protection, creating a magical and meditative
environment. Created with the strength of a Fibonacci spiral, the
swirling fish represent our global community that supports, protects and
surrounds us all. Mapletree Art Vault Pte Ltd purchased the artwork in
2023, and installed it in Singapore.
