The most successful Canadian artist
Introduction: This article is about the painter Paul Ygartua, who is, Given that this article is intended for an international audience, it’s
worth noting that while many names in my collection of mid-20th-
empirically, one of the most successful living Canadian artists. How century Canadian artists may not be immediately recognizable, they
have I reached this conclusion? Let’s start with a bit about myself. I am are well-known among Canadian collectors, dealers, and museum
a businessman, not affiliated with the art industry, and an art collector, a professionals. Furthermore, all the artists featured have works housed
passion I’ve pursued throughout my adult life. I first met Paul in 1993. Our in the National Gallery of Canada or other major museums across
meeting was serendipitous: Paul entered a hotel restaurant where I was Canada, the USA, or Europe. To illustrate the eclectic nature of my
dining, and a business associate who knew him invited Paul to our table collection, here are some of the artists included: James Rosenquist,
for a brief introduction. Following that encounter, I attended an exhibition Zao Wou-Ki, Harold Town, William Weston, Dora de Pedery-Hunt, Jack
of Ygartua’s work; since then, Paul, Joanne, Pat, and I have maintained a Shadbolt, Lowell Nesbitt, Gordon Smith, Joseph Drapell, Tony Onley,
friendship. Over the years, I have acquired over 40 of Paul’s pieces. My Arthur Shilling, Stanley Cosgrove, Yves Trudeau, Herbert Siebner,
art collection boasts well over 1,000 original works, with more than 300 Andries Copier, Yvonne Housser, Sorel Etrog, William Ronald, Tom
displayed in my home at any given time. Hodgson, Andre Szaz, York Wilson, Dorothy Stevens, Tony Urquhart,
and Louis de Niverville. As you may have noticed, the list includes a
few non-Canadians. We’re nearing the end of my personal narrative,
but the most crucial part concerning my assertion that Paul Ygartua is
the most successful living Canadian artist is yet to come. Approximately
15 years ago, I observed that a prominent American art website
provided auction results for Canadian artists but lacked comprehensive
biographical information, especially compared to their American
counterparts. In fact, many records for notable Canadian artists were
devoid of any biographical details. I reached out to the content manager
and offered to assist in researching and providing the necessary
biographical data—such as life dates, museum affiliations, education,
employment history, publications, and exhibition records—despite
not being a professional writer. Since then, they have published over
1,000 of my submissions, with most entries ranging from 500 to 2,500
words in length.
