The work of painter Maria
Eugenia Akel leads the observer
into mysterious and suggestive
locations that gradually reveal
their secrets, a process that opens
the way to myriad interpretations.
A fusion occurs in her paintings
between the figurative and the
abstract; between the faithful
representation of an observed
physical reality and an imagined
visualization; that is, the fusion
of two distinct approaches to
the challenges posed by the art
of painting.
Two major elements constitute
the basis of her present-day
work: printing and the application
of various pictorial techniques.
Impressions on canvas are made
by reworking and digitally fusing
previous works by the artist
herself; the new picture that
results of this process, is then
ready to be painted.
This procedure allows for
several techniques to melt and
mix together, such as collage
of newspapers and silks that
flow and meet linear drawings,
seascapes, human shapes,
fishermen.
We are facing some examples of
the original and distinctive work
of this Chilean artist.
