At its core, this series delves into psychological themes
such as memory, subconscious narratives, and the interplay
between perception and imagination. It taps into the human
tendency to construct and deconstruct stories, presenting
allegories that resonate with emotions buried beneath
conscious awareness. The presence of familiar yet uncanny
figures, clowns, owls, rabbits, and geishas, symbolizes
fragmented recollections, oscillating between whimsical
familiarity and unsettling ambiguity. These characters embody
nostalgia not as a simple return to innocence but as an echo
of unresolved questions and experiences.
The surreal settings reinforce this exploration, creating
liminal spaces where logic dissolves and the subconscious
takes precedence. The paintings operate as psychological
landscapes, depicting transitional states between wakefulness
and dreaming, reality and fantasy, certainty and distortion.
Echoing Carl Jung’s concept of archetypal symbols surfacing
from the collective unconscious, Jiang’s suspended figures
encourage an open-ended dialogue between artwork and
observer, fostering deep introspection.
Another key dimension within this series is the tension
between control and surrender. Though meticulously
composed, the paintings maintain an organic flow, with colors
blending spontaneously in competing and merging tones. This
interplay between chaos and harmony reflects the cognitive
struggle between structure and freedom, the mind’s need to
impose order on abstract experiences while simultaneously
embracing the unpredictability of imagination. Jiang creates
an emotional paradox: the simultaneous desire for certainty
and the willingness to immerse oneself in an undefined,
interpretative space.
Ultimately, Conte (Tale) transforms art into an introspective
experience. These paintings do not dictate fixed narratives
but instead invite personal interpretation, allowing viewers
to project their subconscious onto the canvas. By weaving
nostalgia, dream psychology, archetypal symbolism, and
cognitive duality into her artistic universe, Jiang offers an
opportunity to explore psychological landscapes, unlocking
emotions and thoughts that may have remained hidden.
