The Trials of Madame Beritola
This emotional novella from The Decameron follows the harrowing
trials and eventual redemption of Madame Beritola, whose strength
and resilience guide her through immense loss and eventual reunion
with her family. Themes of perseverance, fate, and love are central to
this tale.
Madame Beritola faces tragedy when her husband, a loyal vassal of
the King of Sicily, is exiled, leading to the loss of their family’s fortune.
While fleeing their home, Beritola is separated from her two sons
during an attack by pirates. Stricken with grief, she finds refuge on a
desolate island with two goat kids as her only companions.
After some time, a ship rescues Beritola and brings her to Lunigiana,
where she takes shelter with a noble family. Unbeknownst to her, her
eldest son, Giusfredi, survives the pirates’ attack and grows up to
serve the same noble family as a steward. Fate intervenes further
when Giusfredi falls in love with the nobleman’s daughter, Spina, and
fathers a child with her.
When their relationship is discovered, Giusfredi is imprisoned, and
Beritola, still unaware of his identity, grieves deeply. Meanwhile,
the political landscape shifts as Sicily rebels against King Charles,
changing the fortunes of many. Amid the turmoil, Giusfredi’s true
COMPOSED IN LAYERED FLIGHTS identity is revealed, reuniting him with his mother.
