Saladin and Messer Torello
This novella from The Decameron tells the tale of Messer Torello,
a noble Christian knight, and Saladin, the esteemed Muslim ruler.
Themes of generosity, loyalty, and the bridging of cultural divides
are central to this moving story.
Messer Torello, a wealthy and gracious nobleman from Pavia,
extends hospitality to a merchant traveling through his lands,
unaware that the merchant is Saladin in disguise. Touched by
Torello’s kindness, Saladin departs with gratitude, promising to
repay the gesture if their paths cross again.
When the Crusades begin, Torello joins the cause, leaving his wife
behind. To ensure her future, he sets a date beyond which she may
remarry if he does not return. However, fate intervenes: Torello is
captured and sold into slavery in Alexandria.
While in captivity, Torello impresses his captors with his skill in
training hawks. His abilities capture the attention of Saladin, who
recognizes his former host. Revealing his true identity, Saladin
honors Torello, welcoming him into his court as an esteemed guest.
Torello falls ill and fears he may never see his wife again. Moved
by his plight, Saladin uses magic arts to transport Torello overnight
to Pavia, where his wife’s second marriage is about to take place.
