Gianni Lotteringhi and Monna Tessa
This novella tells a lighthearted tale of superstition, love, and the
clever dynamics of a marriage. Themes of gullibility and marital
camaraderie frame the story.
Gianni Lotteringhi, a simple-minded and superstitious man,
lives peacefully with his clever wife, Monna Tessa. One night, a
mysterious knocking at their door startles Gianni awake. Terrified,
he rouses Monna Tessa, convinced that the knocking is the work of
a malicious spirit or “bogey.”
Monna Tessa, quick-witted as always, seizes the moment to calm
her husband while maintaining her composure. She convinces
him that the best way to banish the bogey is through a prayer of
exorcism. Together, they chant fervently, adding to the comedic
scene with their exaggerated fear and determination.
Magically, or perhaps just by coincidence, the knocking ceases.
Relieved and emboldened, Gianni believes their prayers have
worked, crediting their joint effort in vanquishing the supernatural
intruder. Monna Tessa, amused but tactful, lets her husband bask
in the triumph.
This charming tale concludes with Gianni none the wiser,
showcasing the humor in superstition and the gentle, guiding
influence of a clever partner.
