An Ongoing Exploration…
There is a strong connection between human mortality and the landscape with
which we are surrounded. The past and the present are immersed deeply in both
and both have many boundaries. The landscape is constantly changing by the
effects of erosion from both time and weather and this strongly reflects in us.
Nothing or nobody lasts forever. From generation to generation we emerge,
we grow, we sustain, we fade and we leave our mark. The cycle continues
opening one life into the next, celebrating our different stages of significance,
good or bad.
My work is an ongoing investigation of time and how it affects the landscape
reflecting our very own existence: the constant renewal of the landscape, and
the constant renewal of generations past and present.
With the urban landscape I tried to connect the fading away and demolition
of old buildings to mortality and with the rural landscape I have continued my
investigations. My reactions to both environments are somewhat similar. The
deterioration of old derelict farmhouses sparsely spread across the surroundings
and the effects of erosion to the landscape through various weather conditions
are constantly changing the face of the landscape.
based on urban city architecture and its surroundings in limerick where I lived
for several years, I began to focus my attentions on the contrast of buildings
old and new, moving traffic and the artificial light from streetlights, juxtaposed
with the numerous cranes that seem to be taking over our cities more and more
each day. rather than including the human figure, I am interested in portraying
it’s presence through the lit windows of office blocks, apartments and houses.
