My paintings explore color interactions constrained by geometric shapes Some explore optical effects using color combinations; others use
that in turn are constrained by a square format. Basically the images patterns and/or geometry to create optical illusions. Exploring color
are about the tension created by overlapping and interacting areas of relationships using a hard-edge format of stripes creates order
flat color. This tension is the ”action” of each work. while the colors are arranged to make something akin to harmonic
                                                                 transitions.
The paintings use bright colors presented in shapes that are geometric, Changes in width and spatial distance between colors creates
linear and hard-edged. The works emphasize the flatness of the canvas rhythms that establishes each painting’s visual “sound”, just as Jazz
which is what the paintings are literally about. The integration of shapes, music is composed of patterns in sound.
through overlapping or interpenetrations blurs spacial distinctions, so that
the sense of the image versus the background becomes ambiguous making The work encourages the viewer to experience the “sounds” of color
the shapes seem to both advance and recede from surrounding colors. as a thing.
