The Role of Visual Arts
by Hans-Joachim Horstmann
Life on our planet proceeds in conditions which are
simply THERE. The thinking human being recognizes in
this existence many modalities (= types and conditions
of being) which are predefined and cannot be changed.
We can structure these modalities in external and
internal ones:
• E x ter n a l : s p ac e, t im e, m a t ter, g rav it a t i o n,
elec tro mag netic waves ( “lig ht ” ) , our p osition -
dependent view on objects, the evanescence of the
moment, etc.
• Internal: the anatomy and physiology of the body,
determined by our genes, the structure of our thinking
and feeling, sexuality, instincts, societal constraints
(rituals, taboos, tradition, rules), his conscience, our
helplessness in the face of destiny, in view of death,
one’s EGO, one’s self.
The creation and perception of art are two possibilities
to escape these modalities partially and temporarily,
ARTIST by practicing art or perceiving an artistic work in a
relaxed manner. What is characteristic of the pure arts
is that they are without purpose.
